Inshallah is a 30-minute documentary made in 2012 as my final project for the MA in Documentary Production at York St John University.

Filmed over ten days in a reception centre in Ferentillo, Umbria, the film follows the daily lives, hopes and struggles of a group of migrants living there while facing an uncertain future.

Working in close contact with the residents allowed a level of trust to develop, while the unstable dynamics within the centre also made the process of filming itself part of the experience.

During the shoot, I was repeatedly asked by the people I was filming: “Why are you doing this?” I didn’t always have a satisfactory answer, and it is a question I still carry with me when making documentaries.
